Spring 2013 Edition of 'Pulse,' Holyhead's Termly Magazine

Welcome to the new edition of Holyhead’s famous Pulse Magazine. This is the second of three editions produced every academic year and once again it is packed with news of the activities students and staff have been involved in over the Spring Term 2013.

Highlights in this issue include news of our many sporting achievements this term, updates on all College activities and a report from the Year 11 visit to Malmaison in Birmingham. There is also a photo montage of Holyhead’s performance of Bugsy Malone which was an extremely successful show and demonstrated the depth of talent for Performing Arts that we have at the school.

There is also important news of two forthcoming events. The first is our annual Presentation Evening on 1st May 2013. This year we are staging the ceremony away from school at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham City Centre. A splendid night is guaranteed for all attending. The second event is the Year 11 Challenge. Last year many of our Year 11 students took part in The Challenge during the summer holidays immediately following their GCSE examinations. The opportunity to participate this summer is there once again for our students and I recommend the experience wholeheartedly.

Unfortunately this magazine has been published too late for news of the Holyhead Big Band’s trip to Vienna that took place during the Easter holiday. Look out for the summer edition for full details of this record breaking tour!

Finally, may I take the opportunity to wish all students preparing for external examinations the best of luck in the weeks ahead. I am looking forward to news of fantastic success in the summer holidays this year.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Holyhead website

For the eighth year running Holyhead students have gained record-breaking GCSE results in 2012. Over 69% of Holyhead’s 16-year-olds obtained five or more A* - C grades including English and Mathematics with more than 90% achieving five or more A* - C grades in total. The performance of students in English and Mathematics was particularly impressive once again with 83% of the cohort gaining at least a grade C in English. Mathematics results improved considerably with 80% gaining at least a grade C this summer as compared to 63% last summer.

This is another superb performance by our students and staff. The number of A* - A grades gained has increased to 9% and our points score has also improved to 573. This is great news for the Handsworth and Soho community, particularly following the challenges of last summer.

Star students at GCSE level include Zahraa Bilquees, Kirandeep Rahania, Prubjhot Randhawa, Quoc Tran and Rachel Patel who achieved at least 16 GCSE passes including many A* and A grades.

We are alsocelebrating the success of our second cohort of Sixth Form students who have achieved a 95% pass rate at A2 in this year’s examinations. All those who wanted to continue their studies at university have been offered places, with students going to Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Birmingham City, Aston, Coventry, Manchester Metropolitan and De Montfort universities. Imran Khan, Anita Chumber and Karisma Raj gained a very credible 460UCAS points. A further six students gained over 400 UCAS points. Many of these young people will be the first members of their families to embark on a course of higher education!

Holyhead has over 200 students on its waiting list for places in Year 7 for September – a tremendous accolade for the school.

I can fully understand why the school is more popular than ever as record-breaking GCSE results, the new Sixth Form and the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer keep the school in the news for all the right reasons.

We are still not satisfied. We are moving in the right direction, but we all share the view that our young people will continue succeed beyond all expectations in the months ahead.
