Music

KS3

In music students are required to cover 3 areas including Performance, Composition and Listening.

Performing

All students are required to learn an instrument. During class time students are expected to learn the keyboard as this provides the student with the opportunity to learn an instrument that produce both melody (tunes) and harmony (chords).

Students are also required to learn songs and sing with their classmates. This helps students to internalise sounds, develop aural skills and musical memory.

Composing

All students are required to make up their own pieces of music and to contribute their ideas to group work.

It is helpful if students have access to a keyboard at home. Students are allowed to practise their skills during break times in the department. Students are asked to learn melodies from traditional music notation and by ear from a variety of styles.

There are plenty of opportunities to perform at Holyhead with Black History Showcase, Tailor made Christmas Assemblies, Presentation Evening, and Performing Arts Showcase.

Students are shown how to combine sounds using musical devices such as ostinato, drones, chords, melodies, changes of dynamics (volume) and tempo (speed). Students are encouraged to be imaginative, to experiment rhythmically and to express their ideas. Students are also encouraged to develop their own personal style.

Sometimes students are asked to compose and combine sounds in groups using a variety of different instruments including percussion (drums etc), vocals, keyboards and other instruments such as clarinet or trombone.

Students are required to compose in a variety of different styles.

Listening

Extra Music Tuition

Did you know that if your child studies a musical instrument and achieves a grade 6 in an external exam that this can contribute to points towards college or university entrance?

It is essential that students listen to a variety of different styles of music from various cultures and across a wide period of history. They are asked to identify musical features and instruments that they hear, using them to inspire their own work.
